Caliente is a refreshing change-up from the sports bars and pub grub that have taken root in Wrigleyville. There is no TV in this storefront by the Sheridan El, the light is pleasantly dim, and a festive mural dominates the decor.

The food is invigorating. Traditional Latin fare -- empanadas, poblano peppers, tacos, and enchiladas -- is transformed through fresh vegetables, rich mole sauces, and a sweet cilantro corn side that I still can't get off my mind.

I recommend starting with the "empanadas triple," a serving of three pastries, stuffed (one each) with sirloin & almonds, garlic cheese potato, and guava.

For entrees, the "pollo poblano" (roasted pepper stuffed with chicken breast, goat cheese, and salsa verde) and the "enchiladas del mar" (seafood enchiladas with grilled rock shrimp on rice) boast complex flavors, perfectly cooked.

The staff is friendly and enthusiastic, but come prepared with conversation as the service can be slow. Caliente is BYO and closed on Sundays and Mondays.
