Jilly's Cafe | Evanston | French | Restaurant
Cozy North Shore cafe serving country-style French.

Our Review

This Evanston bistro feels like a cozy villa in the south of France: lace hangs from cafe rods in the front windows under a green-and-white striped awning, and the ocher stucco walls are broken up with dark wood beams. Instead of fussy haute cuisine, Jilly's serves hearty, country-style French in large portions, veering into eclectic territory on occasion. Traditional starters include mussels marinieres and escargots a la bourguignonne, but there's also Thai noodle salad with shrimp and peanut dressing and a crispy spring roll filled with mushrooms, cherries, and Brie. Entrees move along similar lines -- for Francophiles, there are steak frites and medallions of Cervena venison (served with butternut squash puree, broccoli, and Door County cherry sauce). Stretching international boundaries, the breast of duck with confit leg is done Asian style, and not so successfully: a mound of red cabbage slaw, a soggy wild rice cake, and too much plum ginger sauce. The wine list has more American than French selections, with most priced under $50. Servers are savvy and accommodating.
