Re: “Uru-Swati

We thought we would enjoy a new (for us) South Indian restaurant, so we tried this one. The dahi vada appetizer was stale, although the yogurt over it was fresh. Idli appetizer (3 pieces) was decent, as was the relatively low-spice sambhar that came with it. Two t.v. screens show groaningly awful Bollywood music videos, with the sound turned mercifully low. Floor of women's bathroom was littered with paper towels and needed some attention. Next time we will go back to our favorite south Indian place on Devon, Udupi Palace.

Re: “Habibi

We walked in, and all we had to see to in order to immediately walk out again was that there were people inside smoking tobacco in a hookah. How is this legal in Chicago? I thought smoking was banned in all restaurant. The food might be good (I don't know - I never gave myself the chance to try it) but if you want to avoid second hand smoke and all of the carcinogens that go with it, avoid this place.

Re: “Baghdad Kabab

The Reader states the following as the entire entry for Baghdad Kabob under "Hours": "Lunch: seven days". However, I just called the place, and they told me that they are open on Saturdays until 4:00 AM. I believe that therefore many of their hours safely falls outside of the category of "lunch". Corrections, anyone?

Re: “Patrick O'Connor, 40th Ward

Who, I ask who, will rid us of this dirty dealing machine hack? He and his real estate agent wife have been running a lucrative "I rezone it, you sell it" scheme for years now. He manages to remain unindicted due to the Swiss cheese ethics "rules" of the city council. What is worse, no one has the guts to run against him, likely because such a person will be offered a deal he can't refuse, ala The Godfather.

Re: “Indie Cafe

I have been going to Indie for at least 7 or 8 years, and the food is tasty, wonderful and nicely priced. My issue, however, has to do with noise. I went in there after 10:00 on a Saturday night, and in the newer of the two main dining rooms, the vocal noise was absolutely deafening. The walls and the ceiling are bare and there is nothing to muffle the sound. We immediately asked for a table in the other room. Getting to the other room did not solve our noise issue, however. There, we were bombarded with loud, percussive, techno-disco "music" that assaulted our ears. This happened the previous time we were there as well. Why, in a place where the food is so good and where very obviously many of the customers are middle aged or older, is this necessary? If the owner wants to go into the singles bar business, then just take the leap. Until then, PLEASE give us some tranquility.
