Jem and the Holograms

Four teenage sisters create an amateur music video that becomes an Internet sensation, and a record company president (Juliette Lewis) recruits them to form a pop group. Dumb but inoffensive, this family-friendly musical charts the sisters' transformation from ordinary girls to glamorous pop stars, showing how they get made over in LA and trained to perform for large audiences. Along the way they learn lessons about the duplicitous behavior of record executives (sure to mean little to kids in the audience) and the importance of being themselves. Jon M. Chu, who directed the concert doc Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, maintains a lively pace, and there's some cute business involving a robot that communicates through music.
