Each year, the Chicago Jazz Festival seems to inspire more pre-event presentations and postconcert performances than before. In the early 90s this activity reached a critical mass to become, in effect, a festival of its own--one unrestricted by the ridiculously early 9:30 curfew City Hall slapped on all Grant Park festivals last year. The curfew sliced one slot from each evening's schedule, giving the city's nightclubs and other institutions a greater opportunity--and more responsibility--to make up for the lost time. --Neil Tesser
