This American-Norwegian group (or, more precisely, San Francisco-Oslo) plays freely improvised music, with all the attention to detail, interactivity, and responsiveness that implies, but more than anything they seem intrigued by the grainy, tactile sounds of friction. Acoustic guitarist Havard Skaset and upright bassists Guro Skumsnes Moe and Tony Dryer rub and scratch their instruments as much or more than they pluck or strum, creating low-end rumbles, sibilant long tones, and muffled percussive thwacks; percussionist Jacob Felix Heule approaches his drums similarly, avoiding anything you could call a beat in favor of striated textures and metallic scrapes. On Sult’s forthcoming Harm (Bocian) they combine to create a scrap-heap collage of dry, brittle, abstract sounds, which they control with exquisite patience in slowly developing cycles of tension and release. For this tour Sult is a trio without Dryer; a trio of bass clarinetist Jason Stein, bassist Jason Roebke, and vibist Jason Adasiewicz plays the second set. —Peter Margasak
