As a bandleader, bassist Jason Roebke excels at setting parameters that will bring the most out of his collaborators when they’re let loose within those confines. His octet surveys the history of jazz in elegant compositions that leave extended spaces for improvisation, so that the band can push and pull against his writing and find fresh inspiration in it. By contrast, Roebke’s trio on the new Every Sunday (Clean Feed) begins each performance on a wide-open plain, letting guitarist Matthew Schneider and drummer Marcus Evans shape the music as equal partners. Their performances convey a narrative sensibility steeped in jazz but open to folk, country, blues, and hints of global sounds. The title track opens with Roebke’s probing, unaccompanied bass, but once the others join in, Schneider sets the tone with a loose-limbed, leisurely, and wildly discursive solo that follows its own twisted logic as it mixes Django Reinhardt-style piquancy, Kenny Burrell-worthy chording, and hydroplaning sheets of sound. Evans sets the tone throughout, pushing the music forward with explosive energy but also delicately buoying the interjections of his partners. The recording is admirably conversational—sometimes its sentences are run-ons and sometimes they’re fragments, but you can always understand what these players are saying.
