Oh, btw, aside from the letters the most recent biography which illuminates the possible realities of the events you outline: shooting himself or cutting his ear, ought to be required reading for anyone seeking to comment on his life.
These fallacies you mention, by and for the dilettante shouldn't be perpetuated without a more clear understanding.

History of art, as history in general is rarely accurate and most often without depth or nuance. He didn't kill himself he was shot by a teen. He didn't cut his ear off, Guaguin is the more likely culprit. Knowing that he was unwilling to turn in these persons for having wronged him is to better know his nature.
