Ilesa Duncan's production of Cheryl L. West's 1991 drama, about four generations of African-American women, starts off strong, with vivid, original characters facing believable problems (academic promotion, relationship issues, aging). The five-member cast, reading West's witty, eccentric dialogue, earn plenty of laughs without sacrificing drama or character development. But when things get serious in the second act—each woman, in turn, airs her many long-held grievances about the others—the play sputters. Having created a complex set of dysfunctional relationships, West doesn't seem up to resolving them. Still, the production contains some fine acting, notably Nicole Michelle Haskins's nuanced performance as a bookish college professor. —Jack Helbig
