In 2009 Vancouver duo Japandroids burst onto the scene with Post-Nothing, a short and sweet album of pretty uncomplicated garage rock. Guitarist Brian King and drummer David Prowse haven't changed things much on the new Celebration Rock (Polyvinyl), which mixes lo-fi feedback with the kind of enthusiastic, arena-ready rock destined to soundtrack coming-of-age films about the good old days. The dudes in Japandroids make the combination sound natural, though the worlds of sentimental, cheesy rock and grimy DIY punk rarely intersect. With their soaring melodies and impassioned vocal harmonies, King and Prowse nearly perfect this unlikely but evocative blend, in the process capturing the golden spirit of summer that so many rock records strive for. —Leor Galil Cadence Weapon opens.
