Robert Scogin directs four superb actors in a concert reading of three one-acts by Peter Pan author James M. Barrie, presented by Shaw Chicago. These wry, surprisingly probing vignettes, written between 1910 and 1915, capture a world in transition. In The Twelve-Pound Look, a pompous man hires a temporary secretary—his ex-wife, now happily independent. In Rosalind, an actress copes with the effects of middle age on her youthful image. And in The New Word, a father and son struggle to express their feelings for each other. The son is headed off to World War I; though the play was written in the early years of the conflict, Barrie seems to sense the implications of the impending carnage for tight-knit English society. —Albert Williams
