Great piece, as always from DHK. But to add further nuance, and to echo Kate Kinser's argument, even the supposedly homogeneous rural heartland doesn't necessarily look that way up close. A visit to any one of many majority nonwhite, immigrant-dominated meatpacking towns in Nebraska (such as Lexington) or Iowa (such as Postville) should clear up that misconception.
