Jacco Gardner, Mmoss, Beliefs

When: Tue., March 19, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $10
Dutch singer-songwriter Jacco Gardner makes 60s-style psych pop that’s lushly trippy, carnivalesque, even a little waltzy—he’s often compared to the likes of Syd Barrett, Brian Wilson, and the Zombies. You might not believe that a 24-year-old can really do justice to a sound that flowered decades before he was born, but Gardner’s hypnotic, multifaceted Cabinet of Curiosities (Trouble in Mind)—whose title alone makes me think of corduroy bell-bottoms and Beatles haircuts—proves him worthy of the genre’s modern-day incarnation. He plays nearly every instrument (harpsichord, organ, guitar, clarinet, wood block) and paints his gentle, quavering vocals over arrangements so dense that you’ll hear a new quirky detail or layer of sound with each listen. I’ve been looping “Puppets Dangling” so constantly that I’ve lost time—and lost any idea of where the song begins and ends. I’d build a home in that limbo if I could. —Kevin Warwick Mmoss, Beliefs, and DJs Psyched Alex and LSDino open.
