This 2006 Hong Kong feature by writer-director Pang Ho-cheung begins as a grim study of a rogue cop in Macao who seems hell-bent on self-destruction; after he sleeps with a young hooker and she claims to be his daughter, it improbably turns into a tender if offbeat buddy picture. Charlie Lam's wide-screen camerawork is especially noteworthy, vividly rendering the city's neon-hued streets and dank back alleys. Set in 1999, shortly before Portugal ceded control of Macao to the PRC, this is a melancholy look at a hybrid culture on the verge of major change. In Cantonese with subtitles. 99 min.
