Set in Albany, New York, during the Depression, this adaptation of William Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about a former baseball player (Jack Nicholson) returning from a 22-year drunk was written by Kennedy and director Hector Babenco. Meryl Streep plays the hero's hobo girlfriend, and Tom Waits plays his pal.
