Petra, Rachel, and Tanya Haden—triplet daughters of brilliant jazz bassist Charlie Haden—have been involved with plenty of projects over the past two decades, perhaps most famously That Dog, which featured Petra and Rachel. As Hadens they have close ties to the touring family country band their father was part of before he left Iowa for Los Angeles in 1957, and as the Haden Triplets they explore music very like what that band must have played. The group’s new self-titled album on Jack White’s Third Man label—produced by Ry Cooder, who also plays guitar on it—takes inspiration from old-fashioned close-harmony singing, offering simple, direct versions of classics by other family bands that specialized in that art (the Louvin Brothers, the Stanley Brothers, the Carter Family—including the latter’s “Single Girl, Married Girl”), plus covers of the Kitty Wells honky-tonk number “Making Believe” and Nick Lowe’s lovely “Raining, Raining.” The Hadens don’t take pains to modernize or otherwise transform these songs, instead focusing on the beauty of their braided voices, a blend they’ve been perfecting all their lives. They’re supported by a four-piece band that includes former Nickel Creek guitarist Sean Watkins. —Peter Margasak Iron & Wine (aka Sam Beam) headlines with a solo set.
