Comedy, Drama, Romance
Indie stalwart Henry Jaglom looks at the emotional carnage inflicted on women by their fathers and how it distorts their subsequent relationships with men. The title character (Tanna Frederick) lost her flamboyant dad to a boating accident when she was young and now shows a marked talent for scaring guys away, unaffected (or, more probably, exacerbated) by an endless diet of dating self-help books. When her mother (Victoria Tennant) moves out of their longtime home, Irene discovers a secret box of photos and press clippings that lead her to the father’s one-time mistress (Andrea Marcovicci) and more information about him than she can handle. With its sappy musical vignettes and encounter-session dialogue, the movie consistently overplays its insights, though all three leads contribute thoughtful and genuine performances. With Karen Black and David Proval. PG-13, 94 min.
