Invictus | Chicago Reader

Based on a book by John Carlin, this elephantine sports drama chronicles President Nelson Mandela's quest to unite black and white South Africans by driving the national rugby team to victory in the 1995 World Cup. The movie's biggest asset is Morgan Freeman in the lead role; he captures not only Mandela's moral power and political savvy but his childlike exuberance as the demoralized Springboks (nearly all of them Afrikaners) begin to pull themselves together and beat the odds. But Anthony Peckham's script is formulaic, woodenly reverent, and devoid of real dramatic tension. Clint Eastwood directed, completely out of his element, and Matt Damon costars as Francois Pienaar, captain of the Springboks.
