Steven Dietz's intriguing 2001 mystery concerns a troubled young painter hired to forge a long-lost van Gogh self-portrait. As he struggles to complete his assignment, the painter is visited by the spirit of van Gogh himself, and also haunted by memories of his former teacher, an art historian whose suicide eerily echoes that of van Gogh a century earlier. In Strange Bedfellows Theatre's intimate, low-budget production, directed by Aaron Henrickson, the cast infuse Dietz's sometimes grandiose preachments on art with earnest passion, and John Kelly's inventive lighting clarifies the script's jumps between reality and fantasy. —Albert Williams
