With grit to spare, Stephen Adly Guirgis delivers a hard-boiled portrait of Hell's Kitchen before it got sanitized by Giuliani and domesticated by Disney. Showing scant sympathy, Guirgis depicts a loserland peopled with scammers and schemers, broken geezers, louder-than-life hookers, slumming homosexuals, juvie junkies, and born victims. They're the folks you cross the street to avoid. Which makes the sheer heart that Joanie Schultz finds in this Lanford Wilson/Damon Runyon hybrid astonishing and redemptive. Eleven actors seem to erase everything they've been to become 13 sad survivors drifting through three perfectly pointless days. Authenticity this precise thrills. --Lawrence Bommer
