As a boy Isaiah Zagar was sexually molested by an older man who took him fishing, and as an emerging artist in Philadelphia he was institutionalized after a suicide attempt. According to this respectful but unsparing portrait, at every crisis point in his life, his work has saved him. The birth of his first son prompted Zagar to shift the focus of his art from himself to his family, but his real breakthrough came only when he began furbishing architectural facades and interiors with dazzling mosaics of mirrors, tiles, and found objects. Though he's been called an outsider artist, his work also shows the influence of Picasso, Antonio Gaudi, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Zagar's younger son, Jeremiah, directed, showing particular sympathy for the artist's supportive wife, Julia.
