Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda may be a master of offhand naturalism, but when he lacks a compelling narrative—as with Air Doll (2009) or this 2011 family drama—his movies seem to evaporate. This tells the story of two young brothers, one living in Osaka with their father, a washed-up rock guitarist, and the other in the town of Kagoshima with their unemployed mother. Kore-eda once again proves himself gifted at handling child actors, and he's quite observant of the dynamics of broken families, yet these qualities can't overcome the familiarity of his script. In Japanese with subtitles.
