I Spit on Your Grave

This remake of the infamous 1978 rape-revenge shocker spends significantly less time on the rape and significantly more on the revenge, yet the revenge is much less unsettling, eschewing the element of queasy seduction that made even the rape victim's triumph seem degrading. The remake has better special effects, an extra rapist thrown in to set up an additional plot twist, and a prominently featured video camera that permits some glib self-reference and implicate-the-viewer nonsense. What it doesn't have is the first movie's primal understanding of patriarchal violence and feminist rage, as both moral horror and exploitation gold. As a result, this is a much easier movie to watch. Steven R. Monroe directed.
