A transplanted update of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, this so-called Tollywood musical (2000)—it's in the Tamil language and set in southern India—follows two sisters (Tabu and Aishwarya Rai) as they negotiate obstacles on the road to fulfillment in love and work. Director Rajiv Menon's storytelling style is conventional, but some of the dilemmas the sisters face (the prospect of an arranged marriage, a patriarchal workplace) and suitors they attract (an apprentice film director, an opportunistic banker) are realistic reflections of India's changing urban society. Interspersed with the romantic travails are delirious song-and-dance numbers (with lyrics from a beloved Tamil poet), the best of which are set among Egyptian pyramids, in a Scottish castle, and on a surreal peacock-plumed set. With subtitles. 158 min.
