Uh, I thought, uh, that the movie Seven was good, uh, because Brad Pitt was hot, and uh, because it was scary, and uh, because it was sad when the bad thing happened to his girlfriend.

So when your usually very mean movie critic Jonathan Rosenbaum tells me that Seven was about the malaise of postmodern America ["Don't Worry, Be Unhappy," October 6] and our tendency to embrace nihilism because we have lost our sense of center in the face of the end of the cold war, I get confused. Metaphysics and Calvinistic outrage? Maybe.

But it makes me nervous when somebody shows up for the barbecue with a saute pan, creme fraiche, and a copy of the Foucault reader, know what I'm sayin'?

Jonathan Rosenbaum replies:

Hey, don't let me rain on your parade, dude. Party on.
