Human Capital

A commercial hit and an awards juggernaut in Italy, this sleek and engrossing 2014 drama was actually adapted from an American novel set in Connecticut, but its tale of the moneyed class and those who aspire to it knows no geography. A middle-class real estate agent (Fabrizio Bentivoglio) hopes to exploit his daughter's engagement to a spoiled rich boy by investing everything he's got in a high-stakes hedge fund run by his prospective father-in-law (Fabrizio Gifuni); when one of the children is implicated in a fatal hit-and-run accident, the transaction between the two families turns even more coldly financial. Paolo Virzi directed, and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi contributes an affecting performance as the rich boy's spiritually bereft mother, whose self-worth has been smothered by luxury. In Italian with subtitles.
