Despite being responsible for one of the most unintentionally gross metaphors ever in a band bio (describing a song as Kevin Shields’s wet dream is one thing, but going on to call it a tidal wave is just . . . wow), THE LIFE AND TIMES are good boys. A power trio with an emphasis on the power, they make muscular, sprawling rock in the midwestern tradition, specifically the school of Husker Du and Slint. Fans of Shiner, front man Allen Epley’s previous band, will recognize the music’s seismic dynamic shifts, big hooks, and postgrunge crunchiness, all effected with big amps and numerous pedals. It’s not exactly haute mode, but the band keeps getting better, more precise, and more crushing as time goes on. They travel with a pretty intense light show, but so far on this tour there are no reports of tidal waves. Dianogah opens and Hum headlines. —Jessica Hopper
