Don't be fooled by the strains of Bolero--nothing in Johan Inger's 2001 Walking Mad, partly set to Maurice Ravel's 1928 hit, comes close to hackneyed. In fact, this Hubbard Street premiere promises to push the company's expert dancers into challenging terrain: Swedish choreographer Inger abandons nuance and detail--HSDC strengths--for an awkward, wild energy. The animalistic side of the piece, with its slicing capoeira kicks and graceless pelvic circles and thrusts, lends itself to both eroticism and comedy, the work's dominant notes (though the mood becomes more serious at the end, with the introduction of Arvo Pärt's Für Alina). Inger uses the set he designed--a rough-hewn, movable wall with doors--so dynamically it's practically another performer. Also showing: the world premiere of One on One, by artistic director Jim Vincent, set to Vivaldi, and reprises of Lucas Crandall's The Set and Marguerite Donlon's Strokes Through the Tail. --Laura Molzahn
