HoZac Blackout: Unnatural Axe, Tyvek, Eat Skull, Make-Overs

When: Fri., May 17, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $25, $70 four-day pass
The folks in Tyvek are perfectly Detroit. Devoted to a scene they consider criminally underappreciated (the garage revival that built its reputation petered out ages ago), they play skronky, fuzzed-out rock ’n’ roll that would bring a satisfied smile to Mick Collins’s face—a quality that ought to be mandatory in bands from the Motor City’s garage underground. Tyvek’s most recent full-length, the excellent On Triple Beams (In the Red), combines scuzzy, treble-loaded guitar, ham-fisted but rock-solid rhythms, and Dead Milkmen-style party vibes—plus an occasional dose of Fun House-era protopunk (“Efficiency”). With his halting, matter-of-fact vocal style, front man Kevin Boyer does his best work on undeniable rah-rah anthems (“Wayne County Roads,” “Say Yeah”), and Tyvek’s blue-collar earnestness makes them magnetic—just like true midwesterners. This show is part of the HoZac Blackout festival. —Kevin Warwick Unnatural Axe headlines; Tyvek, Eat Skull, the Make-Overs, Buck Biloxi & the Fucks, and Winter Bear open.
