Comedy, Drama
One of those trinity casts—Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, and Lauren Bacall—that early CinemaScope seemed to require, apparently in a literal-minded attempt to fill up the screen. Jean Negulesco, the director, was Fox's preferred helmsman for these things (Three Coins in the Fountain, Daddy Long Legs, etc), even though most of his efforts now serve as textbook examples of how not to handle the wide screen: thought out lengthwise, his films lose their depth. The stars save this 1953 entry, through fruitful collision if not smooth collaboration. With William Powell, in one of his last good parts, and Cameron Mitchell.
