Richard Lester's black comic attack on the stiff-upper-lip conventions of British war films, with Michael Hordern as a dotty commander and Michael Crawford as a fresh lieutenant who discovers the doctrine of applied cowardice. Lester's op-pop style, jump cutting from incident to incident, seems too inherently cheerful for the material, which features fountains of stage blood. John Lennon, in a supporting role, has an uncomfortably prophetic death scene. With Roy Kinnear and Jack MacGowran (1967).
