Drama, Horror
Again Ingmar Bergman asks to what extent the lover can help the beloved torn between sanity and a world of visionary horrors—the inevitable destiny, Bergman suggests, of the artist. This 1968 effort is one of Bergman's most outlandish, with its pack of ghouls and its heavy suggestions of exhibitionism, necrophilia, and homosexuality—a magnificent failure. With a marvelously spooky sound track using electronic music and fine performances from Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann. In Swedish with subtitles.
