Mike Figgis followed his innovative split-screen drama Timecode with this self-indulgent turkey (2001), shot in Venice at the striking Hotel Hungaria and improvised by a parade of well-known actors (John Malkovich, David Schwimmer, Salma Hayek, Saffron Burrows, Valeria Golino, Burt Reynolds, Lucy Liu, Julian Sands). The loutish director (Rhys Ifans) of a ludicrous Dogma 95 project is assassinated by his jealous producer (Schwimmer); meanwhile cannibal hotel staffers abduct various guests and dine on them in a basement dungeon. Like Robert Altman's M*A*S*H this has a banquet scene posed like The Last Supper, but the basic idea—toothless satire trimming a dull star party—reminded me more of Ready to Wear.
