David Bell says that he and Rob Bowman created this energetic adaptation of Gilbert & Sullivan's classic operetta in 1986, when Bell announced he was going to direct one of two 1939 jazz versions--either The Swing Mikado or The Hot Mikado--and then discovered that no full script and score survives for either of them. The result has the charming, slapdash quality of a show written quickly. Bell's book overlays W.S. Gilbert's plot with just a thin veneer of swing-era hepcatishness, and Bowman's jazzy or bluesy arrangements make Arthur Sullivan's tunes sparkle. In the end, however, the conceit never rises above the level of a very clever, entertaining, but shallow stunt. I left yearning to see the original. --Jack Helbig
