Sean, a high school sophomore with few friends and a self-destructive streak, becomes entangled with Arthur, a businessman at least double his age. In short, claustrophobic scenes, playwright Will Goldberg steadily ratchets up the tension as the characters’ mentor-protege arrangement gets creepier and creepier, eventually crossing over into sexual abuse. From that point, the momentum stalls and the characters are left spinning their wheels through most of the second act. Still, Goldberg has an ear for adolescent argot and manages to maintain his characters’ complexity even while conveying that one’s a victim and another’s a predator. The greatest asset of Josh Sobel’s staging for the Ruckus is Will Wilhelm, whose sullen and hurting Sean is—in true teenager fashion—alternately sweet and exasperating. —Zac Thompson
