Holy Fuck, Crocodiles | Empty Bottle | Rock, Pop, Etc | Chicago Reader

When No Age named this San Diego outfit’s “Neon Jesus” one of their ten favorite songs of 2008 in a year-end feature for the music blog Stereogum, it helped inspire a lot of comparisons between the two bands—and indeed, they’re both duos from southern California with a serious case of the hots for cheap, plentiful distortion. But the murky drum-machine pop on Crocodiles’ forthcoming debut, Summer of Hate (Fat Possum), is much more structured than No Age’s atmospheric punk, as though they’re shaping huge swaths of guitar noise to fit pop songwriting formulas from the Brill Building era. The slightly ominous edge to their sound—which gets a little bump from the album’s Manson-inspired title and cover art—evokes the same kind of dread I feel whenever I visit San Diego. —Miles Raymer
