Hit So Hard

Hole’s Live Through This, one of the most pivotal and celebrated alternative-rock albums of the 90s, was powered by the drumming of Patty Schemel, but the musician was pulled under by heroin addiction and the loss of her close friend Kurt Cobain. After record producer Michael Beinhorn and singer Courtney Love excluded her from Hole’s follow-up album, Celebrity Skin, Schemel wound up a homeless prostitute on the streets of Los Angeles before cleaning herself up and launching a canine day care center. P. David Ebersole, who directed this 2011 documentary, has plenty of material to work with: incredible footage of Cobain, entertaining interviews with Love, and commentary from Schemel about her experiences as a lesbian in the male-dominated rock scene. But choppy camerawork, sloppy editing, and lack of a coherent narrative structure make for a frustrating viewing experience.
