The most surprising thing about Be Forest is that their dreamy Britpop isn’t Brit—they’re from Italy. But even though they have to do it from the far side of Europe, they channel the likes of the Sundays and Cocteau Twins with sublime, languorous perfection—their most recent album, this year’s Earthbeat (WWNNB), has the requisite blurry, quasi-pastoral cover, and the chiming, ethereal music and breathy childlike vocals evoke tranced-out fair-folk leaping beneath a slowly spinning disco ball. “Captured Heart” is probably the standout track; a flute wanders in from some neighboring Renaissance Faire while Erica Terenzi’s drums weave fluid, repetitive patterns that stagger pleasingly. Terenzi also does lovely work on “Hideway,” interpolating march rhythms—like elves massing in the name of bliss—behind the droney swirling of Nicola Lampredi’s guitar. “Colours,” on the other hand, is built on Constanza Delle Rose’s hooky, dexterous bass line, which gently suggests the Beatles—the fount from which all Britpop springs. Be Forest aren’t an innovative or revelatory band, but they’re smart songwriters and gratifyingly committed to their craft; if you love 4AD with all your heart, as they do, this show won’t disappoint. —Noah Berlatsky
