The most remarkable thing about this 1997 martial-arts jamboree is how the main characters, knifed and gunned down by hordes of bad guys, return totally recuperated. Near-invincible peasant hero Ma Wing-jing (Takeshi Kaneshiro) fights his way to the top of the gangland heap in 30s Shanghai, aided by Tam See (Yuen Biao, Jackie Chan's erstwhile sidekick), his equally lethal mentor and sometime rival in love. By the time the last gory conflict plays out you may find yourself in a daze, exhausted by the film's pace and improbable plot twists. Corey Yuen is credited with the direction, but the stunt coordinators deserve all the kudos for this delirious mess.
