Drama
While working on a project in Armenia, an American cartographer (Ben Foster) has a brief romance with a local photographer (Lubna Azabal), even though their personal and cultural differences make them ill-suited for each other. Director Braden King makes their relationship feel all but incidental; he seems more interested in creating a mood than in telling a story. The film’s numerous experimental interludes can be rather striking, particularly some abstracted images that suggest the influence of the great Stan Brakhage. These sequences convey feelings of transience and self-doubt more effectively than much of the dialogue, but given the movie’s theme of failed communication this is probably intentional. In English and subtitled Armenian.
