If Stage Left ensemble playwright M. E. H. Lewis can separate the dramatic elements from the merely emotional ones in her unwieldy but promising new play, she may have something important on her hands. As it stands, she wants her audience to care as much about the disappointment and desperation Americans Zach and Abbie feel over their inability to conceive a child as they do about the life-threatening peril the couple's Indian surrogate mother faces in her rash attempt to flee poverty and her abusive husband. When Lewis focuses on the latter story, she and an adept cast directed by Scott Bishop deftly dramatize the ways a host of sticky geopolitical issues ensnare and endanger all the characters. Lewis is halfway to a great play. --Justin Hayford
