One of Kon Ichikawa's finest films, this quiet 1960 family drama concerns a young woman trying to help her 17-year-old brother, who's been committing petty crimes and running up gambling debts. The script is delicately nuanced, revealing the connections between the characters' behavior; the father is a traditional patriarch who nonetheless overindulges his errant son, and while the boy seems shamelessly irresponsible at first, he eventually reveals his vulnerability and self-hatred. Cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa uses carefully balanced 'Scope compositions and extraordinarily supple, muted colors to mirror the story's emotional shadings and moral ambiguities. In Japanese with subtitles. 98 min.
