Re: “The Selling of Forest Beach

It has been many years since this article was written and when I got to the part about Hoover Hall being demolished it immediately brought tears to my eyes. How many meals I'd had in that grand hall, to know the honor it was to ring the dinner bell, to be awarded the grand prize of "Silver Dustpan" for having the cleanest cabin, to hear the chatter during the meals....so many memories to be crushed by a machine in a mere forty minutes. I attended Forest Beach camp for years, as well as, at the week long session at the end of summer known as "Family Camp" with my mom. Friendships were formed, families created with new friends. I can't even begin to describe all that Forest Beach taught me-how to swim, how to ride a horse, how to work in a kitchen, how to work in a group and as a team, how to be independent and strong and sure of myself. The staff, counselors at first and friends to the end, were amazing and will live on in my heart as some of the greatest people and happiest times of my life. Even as I grew too old for camp I was invited back as a counselor in training, where even though I worked hard I got to do so in a place I truly loved. It is a shame, a damn crying shame, that this happened. The beauty of that land was appreciated and loved by children and adults who normally didn't get to have those experiences. Now, it costs $2100.00 to rent a house on that land for a week! And that was one of the less expensive ones!! I don't know that my mom spent that for an entire summer. Goodbye Forest Beach. You will be missed by many. It is a shame that your beautiful dunes, amazing trees, the activities, the meals and the general wonderfulness (and yes, even those treacherous beach stairs, haha) are gone forever. Thanks for the many years of memories.
