It's difficult to watch PJ Paparelli's high-octane staging of the trash-glam rock musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask without thinking of the recent, acrimonious split between Paparelli and most of the American Theater Company ensemble. After all, the show seethes with the resentment Hedwig, a transgendered Berliner transplanted to America, feels for the teen rock idol who left her behind. But there are plenty of reasons to see this show besides the chance to rubberneck at the crash site of a longtime local company. It's loud--but not too loud (credit to the four musicians and Lindsay Jones's balanced sound design). And it's raucous--but Nick Garrison's Hedwig grows, moving from Liberace-on-meth moments of audience interaction to raw visceral pain. These kids are all right. --Kerry Reid
