John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask's 1998 musical takes the form of a concert given by a German-born trans punk rocker named Hedwig, who has survived communism, heartbreak, and a botched sex-change operation. The latest setback: a painful split from a rising rock god who stole Hedwig's songs and won't acknowledge their relationship. Performing the title role in this Haven Theatre staging, Ryan Lanning winks at every joke and underlines every double entendre, displaying little of the dry wit and emotional depth that made Mitchell's performance in the part (preserved in the excellent 2001 movie version) so memorable. Lanning looks and sounds something like Mitchell, but his eager-to-please approach bars him from accessing the well of pain at Hedwig's core. —Zac Thompson
