Henrik Ibsen's tragic heroine is a beautiful, self-centered young woman who's recently married a bumbling scholar she doesn't love or respect. Bored to tears by domesticity, she entertains herself by cruelly manipulating those around her and even attempting to drive her husband's academic rival—a former admirer of hers—to suicide. Erin Haddock is pure malice as Hedda in Pawel Grajnert's staging for For This Theater. Her thin veil of charm slips off frequently to reveal a petulant child devoid of any redeeming qualities. And that's a problem, because it distorts the tragedy: Haddock's portrayal is so unsympathetic that Hedda's bad end hardly seems unfortunate. Even the other characters, surprised as they are, don't seem devastated. —Julia Thiel
