HEATON-MURPHY DUO

Ever since they started performing as a team a couple of seasons ago, guitarist Matthew Heaton and flutist Shannon Murphy have gathered quite a following. Neither is yet a knockout virtuoso, but the duo's winsome personality and penchant for imaginative programming set it above most other start-up acts. For their latest series of recitals focusing on music of the Americas, these Northwestern graduates (Heaton trained with Anne Waller, Murphy with Mary Stolper) have come up with some gems. Foremost is The History of Tango by Argentina's Astor Piazzolla, the most innovative and entertaining popularizer of the quintessential Latin genre. Of the same ilk--though colored by European impulses--is the sumptuously laid-back Sonatina by Radames Gnattali, a neo-romantic proponent of the bossa nova. Also Brazilian in tone and tinged with jazz is Circulo Magico, a brand-new composition by Evanston-based guitar whiz Sergio Assad. Other pieces in the program include Rough Road, a ferociously rhythmic showcase by Milwaukee's John Downey; Something Every Day by Victor Thompson, a self-taught composer who plays with Heaton in the rock band Flavor Channel; and Couplet, a lyrical ode written for the duo by Rami Levin, a professor at Lake Forest College. Friday, 8 PM, Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, Lake Forest College, College and Sheridan, Lake Forest; 847-735-6010. TED SHEN
