A somber, realistic look at life in the Wyoming ranch country of 1910—where every dramatic event conveniently illustrates the ideological fashions of the late 1970s. You'll have to keep reminding yourself that this ain't an Australian movie, when everything from the strong, independent heroine (Conchata Ferrell) to Richard Pearce's excessively pictorial direction suggests that it is. Rip Torn is the surly emblem of male insensitivity; Lilia Skala is the local matriarch (1979).
