Scheming ringmistress--and possible serial killer--Miranda Towers spirals down, down, down in this campy parody of two Joan Crawford films from the 1960s. David Cerda gives an astounding impersonation of Crawford, his large, feral, heavily made-up face constantly turned to the camera (us) as he mimicks the aging actress's moues and wide-eyed stares. In Cheryl Snodgrass's staging, the other Hell in a Handbag performers also gun their characters into overdrive. Ed Jones is especially funny as prissy schoolmistress Betty Ann Hardwicke, a perfect foil for the worldly Miranda--but, quel dommage, they only have one scene together! Ingeniously, shadow puppets enact all the circus tricks/murders. Kevin Remington and Tim Wilkins's script is uneven, though: clunkers and dead spots alternate with the clever stuff. --Laura Molzahn
