Adventure, Fantasy
The seventh and penultimate entry in the franchise jettisons the humor and fizz of the earlier movies for a much bleaker adult tone. Renegade wizards waging genocidal war against ordinary humans force Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his two best pals (Emma Watson and Rupert Grint) into a final showdown with the satanic Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). Screenwriter Steve Kloves reinforces Harry's messianic aura with an overly protracted sojourn in the wilderness; more impressive is a chilling Orwellian sequence in which the kids infiltrate the Ministry of Magic disguised as bureaucrats. But the best portion is an animated story-within-the-story, supervised by Ben Hibon, that recalls Lotte Reiniger's filigreed shadow puppets as it sets the stage for armageddon. David Yates directed.
